Ready, Aim, Shuffle up and Deal!
Even with a few of our snowbirds heading south for the season, twenty-three dedicated Mavericks put their bows aside and their poker faces on for another exciting night at The Mayfield Tavern. The energy was high from the first shuffle, and the competition didn’t disappoint.
After a few quick announcements, game one kicked off in a flurry of chips and raises. Early momentum belonged to Mike Baker, Candace Sutter, and Denis Beck, each notching wins at their tables and setting the pace for the night.
Game two saw a new trio rise to the challenge as Tyler Macsuga, Scott Sutter, and Mike Pjeter each claimed victories, tightening the overall points race and setting up a dramatic finish heading into the final round.
By game three, tension filled the room. Mike Baker and Candace Sutter sat tied at fifteen points, with Scott Sutter lurking just one point behind. Three more Mavericks were within striking distance, making every hand and every fold count.
In the final stanza, chips moved cautiously as no one wanted to blink first. Candace would be the first to fall, leaving Baker and Scott Sutter to battle for the night’s top spot. Baker fought hard, finishing fourth at his table, but Scott knew what had to be done — win by two and take the night. With a strong push and composed play, Scott Sutter finished second at his table, just enough to edge out Baker by a single point and capture the evening’s victory. Despite the late stumble, Candace held on to claim third place and complete the podium.
With the Fall Season now halfway through, the overall standings saw another shakeup. George Pethers retains the top spot, Rick Hoag holds steady in second, and Mike Baker’s big night vaults him into third. Amber Soper and Mike Soper round out the top five.
With two double-point nights and the special Anniversary Tournament still on the schedule — and each carrying valuable points — the leaderboard is far from settled. It’s anyone’s title to win.
Until next time, stay sharp, stay safe, and as always, we’ll see you on the felts, Mavericks!
