As the first month of the Fall Season came to a close, twenty-seven Mavericks packed into The Mayfield Tavern for the first Double Points Night of the season—and the atmosphere was electric. Newcomer Alex Goyette entered the evening still holding the top spot in the standings thanks to his commanding win in Week One. But with the competition tightening week after week, everyone came ready to make a move and cut into his lead. From the opening hands of Game One, it was clear that this night would test both patience and nerve. Action was brisk at Table Three, where Rick Hoag wasted no time asserting control, steamrolling his way to the first table win of the night. Meanwhile, play at the other two tables was slower and more strategic, but just as fierce—Mike Pjeter and Mike Soper each closed out strong to secure wins and early momentum. If one word could describe this season so far, it would be “competitive”—and Game Two only reinforced that theme. In a true display of balanced play, three different players emerged victorious: Amber Soper, Steve Thomson, and Lewis Iler. Going into the final game, Amber and Steve were tied for the overall lead, but George Pethers and Mike Pjeter sat just a single point behind. With so much on the line, everyone knew the night’s crown would come down to these four. Then came Game Three—and the fireworks. Steve Thomson was the first of the leaders to bow out, an uncharacteristic early exit that blew the field wide open. Amber Soper followed shortly after, and when Mike Pjeter hit the rail, only George Pethers remained standing. Not content to just outlast the field, George went on to win his table, sealing the nightly victory in style. When the chips were counted, Pjeter took second overall, with Amber Soper rounding out the top three. Updated Season Standings With double points in play, the leaderboard saw a major shake-up: 🥇 George Pethers – vaults into the points lead 🥈 Steve Thomson – moves up to second after a consistent sixth-place finish 🥉 Rick Hoag, Amber Soper, and Mike Soper – round out the top five Four weeks in, we now have four different nightly winners, setting the tone for what’s shaping up to be the most competitive season in Maverick history. Every point matters, every hand counts—and the Fall campaign is just heating up. Until next week, Mavericks… See you on the felts!
