News and events from the South Dakota region.
Several South Dakota players somehow made it out of Sioux Falls during the blizzard to compete in Free Poker Network’s “Cash King” National Championship in Las Vegas. Four Sioux Falls regional players made the final table, Ben Tesch representing the Thirsty Duck in Sioux Falls, Mike Chilarski from Vermillon Eagles Club, Terry Wililams and Andrew Roberson both from Mojo’s in Yankton combined to win $8,250 in cash. Andrew Roberson took 3rd place and won $5,000. The top prize was $25,000, which went to Bob Tweten from Grand Forks, ND.
Andrew Roberson seemed to be on track to take the whole thing down. Earlier in the weekend, his name was randomly drawn to play poker pro and 3-time WSOP bracelet winner Dutch Boyd in a headsup match. Roberson won. He received a hundred dollar bill and a signed book from Dutch Boyd. At the final table, Roberson came close but luck favored eventual winner Bob Tweten from Grand Forks. Bob could not miss and gained a huge chip advantage down the stretch that Roberson could not overcome.

The top eight players will advance to the FPN National Championship at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas on June 7th.
While in Las Vegas the new FPN National Champion will win the coveted $10,000 Main Event Seat for his or her chance at millions of dollars in the most prestigious poker tournament of the year. There will also be over $15,000 in additional buy-ins and prizes to be awarded at the FPN National Championship depending on how you finish.
At the Ultimate Poker Fantasy South Dakota State Championship players gathered to see who the lucky eight were going to be that will be heading to Las Vegas. The top seven from the main tournament all qualified along with one player from the second chance tournament. In the end the lucky eight were: (pictured left to right, standing) Michael Shackley, Ben Tesch, Matthew Scanlon, Lyle Wegner, and Monte Evans. (Sitting) Gale Fennema, Deb Skyberg, and Todd Cunningham. Congrats!
Fresh off her victory at the Brandon VFW Super TOC four days earlier to get herself qualified for the National Championship, Tanya Rausis (VFW, Brandon) was in the same building now shooting for a double stack for the National Championship inwhich she was able to accomplish by finishing in the top seven. Coming along with Tanya will be some familiar faces as Terry "Doc" Gloe (Shenanigan's Pub, Sioux Falls) was able to qualify for the Nationals for his third time. Nicole Kaul (Sedona Pub, Tyndall) and Jake Obermeier (Shenanigan's Pub, Sioux Falls) will be coming along for their second time each respectively. Joining them will be first time state champs Tim Baatz (Shenanigan's Pub, Sioux Falls), Larry Goeken (Shenanigan's Pub, Sioux Falls), and Olander "Doc" Benson (VFW, Brandon). The second chance winner to get qualified for the National Championship was Travis Lee (VFW, Brandon) to round out the eight new SD winners.
