It had been three years since the last visit to North Platte, Nebraska for a state championship. The west side of the state was happy to showcase what they had to offer starting with a tag team freeroll on Friday night for people that drove up early. It was a beautiful Saturday unlike three years previous when 17 inches of snow was dumped on North Platte. Everyone was settled in for a long day of poker. All the usual faces were there.

Recently David Kalet from Norfolk, Nebraska won the FPN Online spring regional championship to qualify for the Golden Ticket National Championship. The regional championships are held every three months online and to qualify you must win your regional in the playoffs. It is an exclusive tournament with less than 30 players. David qualified from the Depot in Norfolk and went on to win the North Nebraska regional to qualify for the spring regional championship online. David not only won his spot in the Golden Ticket National Championship, he will also be receiving airfare allowance and a hotel stay at Harrah's in December. On April 21st Rod "Rodster" Lovig (The Depot) and Karen Sjullie (TD Club) both longtime and well known players in the league we able to break through and win at the Nebraska State Championship. There were a couple close moments while we were on the bubble player, but both made it through to win their first ever state victory. Joining the Rodster and Karen were Clarence Osentowski (Legends), Steve Schluns (Wheelers), and Ron Anderson (Blarney Stone). All five have qualified and will compete at the National Championship on July 4th to try and win one of the twelve seats into this years World Series of Poker!
Clarence Osentwoski from Drifters Pool Room in Lincoln, NE was a dominate force in the recent Vegas or Bust National Championship. Altogether there were 99 competitors that came from 19 different states to Las Vegas at the MGM poker room. Clarence played solid poker all day and came in sixth place to win himself a $1,000 seat into the World Series of Poker Event #59 the following day. The top eleven players all won a seat into Event #59 with the overall winner also receiving a $10,000 Main Event Seat. Altogether over $22,000 in cash and prizes were awarded and Clarence was able to get a piece of that.
We are gearing up for our state championship run with the Nebraska Vegas or Bust championship leading us off. This Saturday at the Depot in Norfolk 76 poker players from around the state will be battling for the top five spots to see who will be qualified for Vegas or Bust National Championship in Las Vegas at the MGM Casino on July 4th. The top two players will win an airfare allowance and a hotel stay at Hooters from July 3rd through the 6th. Altogether there are 18 players who will start with having an advantage of a double stack by qualifying in both the fall and winter quarters, but in poker anything can happen. See you Saturday!
